Vetri Laptop Scheme — Free Laptops for College Students (Announced)

Scheme Overview

WHAT HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED

The Revised Budget Estimates for 2026-27 — the first Budget of the present
Government — were presented to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on
5 August 2026 by Dr. N. Marie Wilson, Minister for Finance, Planning and
Development.

The Budget announced the Vetri Laptop Scheme, under which laptops are to be
given to college students as a learning resource for higher education, technical
skill-building and skill development training. Rs.2,000 crore has been allocated
for the scheme.

WHERE IT STANDS TODAY (page updated 6 August 2026)

- The Government Order for the scheme has NOT been issued.
- The eligibility rules have NOT been notified — which colleges, which courses
  and which year of study are covered has not been stated.
- No number of students, no per-student value and no distribution date has been
  announced.
- There is NO application form and NO application portal.
- The Finance Department had not yet published the 2026-27 Budget Speech
  document on financedept.tn.gov.in when this page was written.

TN JOBS will update this page as soon as the Government Order and the
application details are published on an official tn.gov.in site. Nothing on this
page is an application form, and TN JOBS does not collect applications for any
scheme.

Benefits

- A laptop for the college student, given free of cost (announced).
- Rs.2,000 crore has been allocated for the scheme in the Revised Budget
  Estimates 2026-27.

The stated purpose is to support higher education, technical skill-building and
skill development training. No per-student value and no number of beneficiaries
has been announced.

Eligibility

- College students in Tamil Nadu.

NOT YET FIXED
The Budget announcement did not state any of the following. They are decided
only in the Government Order:
- whether the scheme covers government, government-aided and self-financing
  colleges, or only some of them
- which courses and which year of study qualify
- any income ceiling or other condition
- the number of students to be covered

Treat any specific eligibility rule you see for this scheme on social media or
on a non-government website as unverified until the Government Order is
published.

How to Apply

APPLICATIONS ARE NOT OPEN. There is no form, no portal and no last date at this
stage. The scheme has only been announced in the Budget.

WHEN IT OPENS, colleges are normally the route for a student scheme of this
kind. Apply only through your college or through an official tn.gov.in website —
this page will carry the link the moment one exists.

WARNINGS
- The government charges no fee for this scheme. Do not pay any agent or
  middleman, and do not pay anyone who says they can "register" you early.
- No official will ask you for your OTP, ATM PIN or bank password.
- Do not enter your details on links forwarded through WhatsApp or Telegram.
  Check that the address ends in .gov.in before typing anything.
- TN JOBS does not accept applications for this or any other scheme, and will
  never ask you for money or documents.

Documents Required

Not yet notified. No document list has been announced for this scheme, because
the Government Order has not been issued.

Do not hand over your Aadhaar, bank passbook or college records to anyone who
claims to be collecting them for this scheme.
