Scheme Overview

WHAT THE SCHEME IS

The scheme's full name is the Moovalur Ramamirtham Ammaiyar Higher Education
Assurance Scheme; it is known everywhere as Pudhumai Penn. It was announced in
the Budget Speech of 18 March 2022 and is run by the Social Welfare and Women
Empowerment Department.

Its purpose is to stop girls from dropping out after school for want of money.
A girl who studied Classes 6 to 12 in a Government school and enrols in higher
education is paid Rs.1,000 every month, by Direct Benefit Transfer, into an
account in her own name.

HOW THE MONEY REACHES HER

The department has the accounts opened through four core banks — Indian Bank,
Canara Bank, Indian Overseas Bank and the State Bank of India — and pays
monthly by DBT. The higher education institution certifies twice a year (30 June
and 31 December) that the student is still on the rolls, and payment continues
on that basis.

Benefits

- Rs.1,000 per month, directly into the student's own bank account.
- Paid until the uninterrupted completion of her undergraduate degree, diploma
  or ITI course.
- Paid by Direct Benefit Transfer, monthly.

Eligibility

- Girl students who studied from Classes 6 to 12 in Government schools.
- Pursuing their first higher education — a recognised undergraduate degree,
  diploma or ITI course at a recognised institution, college or university.
- A student already receiving another scholarship remains eligible for this
  scheme.

How to Apply

The student applies for herself, online, through the department's Penkalvi
portal. Her school and college records are used to establish that she studied
Classes 6 to 12 in a Government school.

WARNINGS
- The government charges no fee for this scheme. Do not pay any agent or
  middleman, and do not pay anyone who offers to "get it sanctioned" for you.
- No official will ask you for your OTP, ATM PIN or bank password.
- Do not enter your details on links forwarded through WhatsApp or Telegram.
  Check that the address ends in .gov.in before typing anything.
- TN JOBS does not accept applications for this or any other scheme, and will
  never ask you for money or documents.

Documents Required

Keep ready: school records showing Classes 6 to 12 in a Government school, the
college admission or bonafide certificate, Aadhaar, and the bank account details
in the student's own name.
